Planned Outage

Two of our most popular genealogy databases will be down this Saturday, February 13, 2016. Both Ancestry Library and HeritageQuest will be down during a planned outage scheduled by ProQuest, their parent company. We apologize for any inconvenience. During this time feel free to look through any of our other many databases.

Main telephone line down at our Delmar Avenue location

Our main telephone line at 2001 Delmar Avenue is down.  We apologize if you called and all you heard was unanswered ringing.  This is an external line issue and we are awaiting a fix from the telephone company, which may not happen until later this weekend.  Until then, please call our second line at 452-6239 for service or questions.  As always, the Johnson Road library can be reached at 452-6244.  Thank you for your continued patience.

Downtown Library open; Youth Services Department closed

The Youth Services Department on the lower level of the Downtown Library is currently closed to the public. This means that the Saturday Teen gaming program is postponed. We will keep everyone updated when we reschedule the program and reopen the lower level, which should be early next week.

We do have a temporary YS desk on the main floor in front of the stairwell to the lower level. We can still provide summer reading services (signing up, reporting, and receiving prizes) from the temporary desk. If you need something from the collection we can send a staff member to get it for you. Thank you all for your continued patience.

Employment Opportunities

Are you someone (or do you know someone) who enjoys working in a customer focused environment and only wants to work an average of 20 hours per week?  Six Mile Regional Library District (SMRLD) has two immediate openings.  Both positions start at $8.50/hour and will receive an excellent benefit package.  Available vacancies are identified below:

Custodian (Part-Time)

Custodians are vital to ensuring that the library is clean and hazard free.  Responsibilities include general cleaning and maintenance such as vacuuming, sweeping, mopping and/or waxing floors; dusting and polishing furniture; cleaning and sanitizing restrooms and soiled furniture and floors; and some outside duties such as removing snow or ice, cleaning filters, etc.  Custodians also may assist with moving furniture, creating displays, and assisting customers.

Requirements include a high school diploma or equivalent; knowledge and ability to operate light industrial cleaning and maintenance equipment; knowledge of custodial practices; and the ability to interact in with the public using a professional attitude and demeanor. Must have a valid driver’s license and current automobile insurance. Evening work is required.

Library Aide (Part-Time)

Library Aides are very physically active and are responsible for making sure library materials can be easily found by customers.  Responsibilities include shelving books, DVDs, and other library materials; identifying damaged materials; and cleaning books shelves.  Aides also provide customer service by performing such tasks as assisting customers using library equipment and occasionally checking materials in and out, renewing library materials, and/or registering new library customers.

Requirements include a high school diploma or equivalent; good knowledge of the English alphabet; working knowledge of computers, the Internet, and Microsoft products; the ability to arrange things in certain order according to a specific set of rules; good oral and written communications; and the ability to interact in with the public using a professional attitude and demeanor.

Anyone interested can get an employment application from either Library location or online.

Completed applications should be returned to the Delmar location or faxed to (618) 876-6317 (attention Juliette Douglas).
